A rogaine is a navigational contest for teams on foot, with a fixed time limit. The "Big Trig" is Orienteering Hutt Valley's traditional rogaine for the year.
OHV ran NZ's first rogaine in 1991. Since then we've worked UP to the championship 24-hour rogaine (Tararua in 2006, Moonshine in 2010) and we've worked DOWN to afterwork 3-hour and even 1-hour mini rogaines. But each year we like to put on a "middle-sized" rogaine that appeals to all groups - tough adventurer racers to weekend warriors to family groups. It's usually between 6-12 hours long. Of course you can sample the area with a shorter option.
"The Big Trig" is our name for for it. Big means its bigger than our regular rogaines. Trig means there's some hills. The subtitle usually indicates where it is. We've got a huge amount of terrain all around us - the start is usually within an hour of downtown Wellington.
We've had middle-sized rogaines up the coast from Terawhiti to Reikorangi; various parts of the huge Akatarawa Forest; Rimutaka Forest Park; and most of the regional parks. Last year's (2016) BigTrig was an 8/4hr one in the beautiful Rimutaka Forest Park where we had our 4th rogaine in 1993. This year we revisit Belmont Regional Park, overlooking the Hutt Valley, Wellington and Porirua. You might think of wide open spaces, but there's a substantial amount of bush there; and a course planner who has specialised in exploring it.
You can choose 3, 6 or 9 hours. The longer periods will finish at 5pm, the 3hrs will be 1-4pm.
And we're even offering that feature of traditional 24hr rogaines - darkness. You can do 3 of your hours on Saturday night 9-12midnight, for a 20% points premium! Then you can crawl into your tent, or go home for a sleep, and do the rest next day. Will it be worth it? Depends completely on being able to pick night-friendly controls. It will be a bit of a punt, but this is not a championship - you'll do it for the experience of something different.
So the standard 9-hour Big Trig 2017 will run from 8am to 5pm. The 6-hour Big Trig will be 11-5pm. And the 3hr "Little Trig" will go from 1-4pm. (Actually 3-hour teams can do their 3 hours anytime between 8-5, we're flexible.)
The base is at "The Woolshed" at the end of the curiously-named Stratton Street which starts in Normandale, Lower Hutt. "Woolshed" is a funny name too, it's been converted to a classroom/event centre, with hot and cold water, toilets etc. The ranger will open up a grassy parking area for us just 200m away. And there's space for tenting close in. Allow 10min to get there from the Dowse interchange on SH2 in Lower Hutt. If you're from out of town there's no public transport, but ask us to find you a lift with a local team.
The best rogaining maps in NZ. Developed from the LINZ topo, but the track network hugely improved over 26 years of rogaining, and laser-derived 10m contours. Rogaining - the original adventure race - the one with decent maps and controls in the right place:-))
