The Big Trig - What Is It?

A rogaine is a navigational contest for teams on foot, with a fixed time limit. The "Big Trig" is Orienteering Hutt Valley's traditional rogaine for the year.

OHV ran NZ's first rogaine in 1991. Since then we've worked UP to the championship 24-hour rogaine (Tararua in 2006, Moonshine in 2010) and we've worked DOWN to afterwork 3-hour and even 1-hour mini rogaines. But each year we like to put on a "middle-sized" rogaine that appeals to all groups - tough adventurer racers to weekend warriors to family groups. It's usually between 6-12 hours long. Of course you can sample the area with a shorter option.

"The Big Trig" is our name for for it. Big means its bigger than our regular rogaines. Trig means there's some hills. The subtitle usually indicates where it is. We've got a huge amount of terrain all around us - the start is usually within an hour of downtown Wellington.

We've had middle-sized rogaines up the coast from Terawhiti to Reikorangi; various parts of the huge Akatarawa Forest; Rimutaka Forest Park; and most of the regional parks. Last year's (2017) BigTrig was an 9/6/3hr one in the Belmont Regional Park, overlooking the Hutt Valley, Wellington and Porirua.

This year we head over to Wainuiomata, an area surrounded by hills on all sides. The ‘Tour de Wainui’ course will see you explore tracks on all of these hills, from East Harbour regional park across to Wainuiomata Hill, the Trail Park, and through to Mowlem and Crowther. You may even drop down some tracks into Lower Hutt. The majority of the tracks are quite runnable, but we have included some nice steep technical tracks and bush travel to make life more interesting. You can choose 3 or 6 or hours. The 6-hour will run from 10am to 4pm the 3hr event will run 12.30 – 3.30pm. (Actually 3-hour teams can do their 3 hours anytime between 10-4, we're flexible.) The base is at "Wainuiomata High School" in Parkway, Wainuiomata. There will be hot and cold water, toilets etc. There is plenty of parking around the school.  If you're from out of town there's public transport (a bus over the Wainuiomata Hill from Waterloo train station or Westfield shopping centre, Queensgate), but ask us to find you a lift with a local team.

The best rogaining maps in NZ. Developed from the LINZ topo, but the track network hugely improved over 26 years of rogaining, and laser-derived 10m contours. Rogaining - the original adventure race - the one with decent maps and controls in the right place:-))
