Planner's Commentary

Months of planning. One Huge Course. Mt Climie – a very seldom area used for a Rogaine.

What loomed as a wet day of Rogaining turned out to be a cracker. Warm sunny conditions, but a little cold on the tops. We couldn’t have wished for a better day.

This was a BIG course and the size of it caught many teams out, both in the 3-hour and 6-hour event. While the controls close to the start/finish were heavily visited, it was great to see so many teams attack the East Climie Ridge and the ridge off the top of Climie into Mangaroa Forest. Was it too remote and challenging? Some nervous moments with 20% of teams late back, but stoked to not have to put the running gear on to go out and find anyone. Phew.

The only controls that were challenged were Control 33 and Control 52, although most teams successfully found each of these. I generously awarded the points to those that claimed Control 33, as other padlocks on the Maymorn Station were identified (you were clearly in the right place). I was less generous with Control #52 – again most teams found this and those that didn’t were clearly not in the right location.

The most pleasing aspect was how close the tussle for first place was.

• In the 6-hour event, De Rare Doedelzaic were 20-minutes late and after losing 200 points still managed to pip More Hills More Fun by only 20 points (1120 vs 1100). Butter Chicken Legs nabbed third spot in the 6-hour event with 1000 points.
• In the 3-hour event, Danger Children snuck past Triple H to win by only 10 points (570 vs 560). Stretton lost 20 points for being 2-minutes late, but still secured third place with 490 points
